Whether it’s a situationship, one-night stand, long-term relationship, or even marriage, there is no such thing as sex that is too safe. In today’s generation, it’s unfortunately too easy to take photos or videos without consent at any given moment—especially during sex and intimate moments. Because of this, Innocean Berlin and German health brand Billy Boy created Camdom, an easy-to-use app that prevents people from non-consensually documenting sex.

Camdom is labeled as a digital condom. To use the app, users place their smartphones close to each other and swipe down a virtual button to block all cameras and microphones before having sex. If one user tries to sneak out, an alarm signals a potential threat of non-consensual recording. It will simultaneously block as many devices as needed if a recording is detected.

“Nowadays, smartphones have become an extension of our body, and we store a lot of sensitive data on them,” says Camdom’s app developer Felipe Almeida. “In order to keep your data private and protect you from the recording of non-consensual content, we've created the first App that can block your camera and mic simply through the use of Bluetooth.”

With the non-consensual recording of sex comes unwanted attention, harassment, emotional distress, depression, suicidal thoughts, and loss of relationships, jobs, opportunities, and friendships. Camdom’s mission is to allow people to feel comfortable and liberated during sex, as well as expose those who are not safe to engage in sex with. Safe sex is just as important in the virtual world as it is in the physical.

Camdom by Billy Boy is available for IOS and Android, coming to the iPhone App Store by the end of 2024.
