Omar SB Makes You Feel Present

His new-found love for DJing is already shifting New York City’s party scene.

“As a kid and even today, I get told, ‘I always have a song for everything,’” says artist and DJ Omar SB. “Hearing that all the time was one of a few things that inspired me to DJ. And generally being outside, whether it’s going to concerts/festivals, parties around the city, and me hosting events back then and turning up to the DJs’ spins.”

Hailing from Southside Jamaica, Queens, Omar SB is becoming a DJ connoisseur and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon. His ability to read the room no matter where or what he’s spinning makes for a packed venue. He began his journey as a DJ in 2021 using different apps on his iPad. Omar didn’t have a laptop yet, so he became a master at using his resources.

If Omar could describe his signature DJ sound in one word, it would be ‘serotonin.’ He says his goal, no matter the event, is to make people feel free and present with every song and transition. He enjoys spontaneity, so spinning different songs and genres he doesn’t usually hear at parties gets people to return. It brings joy not only to partygoers but also to Omar himself.

“The emotions I feel when I DJ are a mixture of excitement, super focused, or a few times frustrated when certain things on a CDJ/XDJ don’t work,” he says. “Excited like a little kid playing with a new toy and super focused like playing Super Smash Bros online. I’m too focused when I sometimes forget who’s next to me or speaking to me.”

Omar recently became known for mixing and editing songs that no one would expect. The Less I Know, The More I Flock blends Tame Impala’s The Less I Know The Better with Kodak Black’s No Flocking. To say that people fell in love with the mix would be an understatement. When he plays it at parties, the crowd goes wild.

While he plays music depending on the vibes, Omar also loves to play songs from artists he admires, like Tyler, the Creator, Travis Scott, Childish Gambino, Baker, FKJ, Ambré, Summer Walker, Tame Impala, The Internet, and Jamila Woods. He plays various genres like alternative R&B, funk, house, and deep-cut hip-hop. He expects even more mixes, edits, and curated events from that.

DJing isn’t Omar’s only passion. As a kid, he played violin, piano, and trombone. The multidisciplinary was in theater and danced step and ballroom. As far as goals, Omar says he can see himself producing original music and drawing and painting more. Outside of music, he wants to be a full-time art director and continue to be a Renaissance man.

While he’s made a name for himself, Omar wanted to thank a few people for helping his DJ career flourish: Levar, Zillion, Campdukes, Shek Dash, and Chizzum.

“There’s no limit to what I can achieve, and I know that with every inch of my soul,” Omar says. “For all artists in whatever field, Always stay curious, always try to expand your taste. Language is inevitably evolving, and it is imperative not to let anything or anyone hold you back from what you’re capable of.”
