This Weekend: Pioneer Works’ Press Play 2024
The fifth edition will showcase more than 130 artists of all mediums.
Brooklyn-based artist and science-forward non-profit cultural center Pioneer Works will return on December 7 and 8 for its fifth edition of Press Play. The free, weekend-long event will showcase more than 130 artists in music, writing, poetry, and exhibitions. Visitors can find fresh ways to read, listen, create, and confront culture through books, records, art, ephemera, talks, and workshops. Many of these artists defy conformity to help extend Pioneer Works’ commitment to amplifying ingenuity and innovation.
Some highlighted panels and conversations include Office Hours: Releasing Good Music on a Bad Budget, Sampling and Sound as Archive, The Right to Pee, Truth or Dare, and I’d Like to Report a Murder. These discussions feature notable artists, critics, and publications like Moses Sumney, Purple Tape Pedigree, Hell Gate, Brandon Taylor, and many more. They will be live-streamed on Columbia University’s student-run radio station, 89.9 WKCR-FM. Local Brooklyn spots will also offer food and drinks from Kreung Cambodia, Gotham Coffee, Spectro, and more.
“Press Play has become a signature program at Pioneer Works, and we’re thrilled to be reconvening the fair after being closed for several months for renovations in our revitalized space,” says Joshua Jelly-Schapiro, Pioneer Works Director of Publishing and Co-Editor-in-Chief of Broadcast. “As a cultural center devoted to pushing arts and science, publishing has become increasingly central to our mission at Pioneer Works. And Press Play is where we get to welcome our friends and colleagues to the building—not only to celebrate platforms and publishers we love but to help expand our sense of what creating culture can look like today.”
Press Play is free and open to the public. However, a $20 donation is suggested to help sustain the program. Those who donate more than $20 will receive a limited-edition bag designed by artist duo Shanzhai Lyric and a copy of Broadcast Issue 02.
