Heba Zagout was a devout mother, wife, and painter. Amidst the war on Palestine, Zagout and her children were killed by Israeli war strikes over the weekend. The acclaimed Palestinian artist’s death went viral when public figure Zehra Allibhai announced the news with a photo of Zagout’s artwork.

Zagout’s acrylic paintings often depicted the nation’s elaborate and ancient architecture in Jerusalem before bombings and invasions. Her artwork recollected her childhood and what once was Palestine. For example, a painting of an olive tree reminisced on Zagout gathering olives during harvest season with her family, and her mother would preserve them year-round with lemon slices and peppers. One of her most popular paintings displayed fireworks over Jerusalem to honor a longing for celebration and liberation.
