Jacob Boatsman: Happy People
The two-hour feature film is an inspiration for those battling mental health issues.
Filmmaker Jacob Boatsman directed, wrote, and edited Happy People, a two-hour feature film that explores the aftermath of someone who attempted suicide. The concise yet impactful film shows the attempt's effects on oneself and the people around them. Happy People hit home for Boatsman, as he is a survivor of suicide attempts and has lost multiple friends and loved ones. He hopes to portray both sides of the story regarding mental health. Happy People will be on Amazon Prime from December 15. Watch the trailer below.
“This film was by far the most emotionally draining and challenging experience of my life. While there were many therapeutic moments in directing and supporting the actors, as well as witnessing my own personal story unfold on screen, there were also many nightmare moments. One moment that I will never forget took place in the lead actress's bathroom. I was watching her give a phenomenal performance, but all I could see was the 16-year-old me in that same bathroom, going through the same thing. The only difference was that I was now the director, forcing the lead actress to do this act, and it became too much. The lead actress and I agreed to take a break. In tears, I went to my first assistant director in an attempt to confide in him. I told him that I didn't think I could continue with the scene, that I had never felt this much power and fear on a film set, and that my past traumas were coming back to haunt me.” — Jacob Boatsman
